Canal boat adventures

A guide to day trips on the Kennet and Avon canal

Just beyond the gates of Widbrook Grange lies one of Wiltshire’s most relaxing adventures — the Kennet and Avon Canal. A picturesque and historic waterway that offers guests a front-row seat to some of the hidden gems in Wiltshire, the world heritage city of Bath and beyond during their holiday with us. It's always on the lists of top things to do near Bradford on Avon and a favourite with locals, too.

A canal boat adventure is like stepping into a slower, sweeter rhythm of life. Canal boats drift at about 4 mph (slower than a brisk walk), so you have time to absorb the greenery around you, the wildlife and the gentle sounds of birdsong. It’s calming and refreshing, but also great fun. You can play captain for the day, choosing when and where to moor up for a picnic or a pint, and a lazy day on the water pairs perfectly with a relaxed dinner back at the hotel’s Kitchen Restaurant or a G&T in our cosy, rustic gin bar

So, why not press pause on life for a few hours and explore Wiltshire by water during your visit to Widbrook Grange?

Why we love the Kennet & Avon Canal

The 87-mile-long Kennet & Avon Canal starts in Bristol and ends in Reading. Winding its way through market towns, this historic attraction is more than just a canal, it's a living ribbon of history, nature and charm. A journey along the canal, either by boat or on foot, will feature ivy-clad cottages, humpback bridges, and cosy pubs and cafés. Wildlife enthusiasts will love keeping an eye out for herons, swans and the occasional kingfisher. It’s peaceful, picturesque and full of that timeless English countryside magic.

Avon canal boat hire: Where can you hire a canal boat near Widbrook Grange?

You’re in luck! Widbrook Grange is just a hop and a skip from Bradford on Avon Marina, a lovely little spot to hire a boat. If you need a recommendation for Kennet & Avon Canal boat hire, look up Sally Narrowboats – they’re nearby and super friendly.

Do you need experience to steer a canal boat?

Nope, not at all! That’s the beauty of it, you don’t need a boating licence or any prior experience. The hire team gives you a hands-on briefing and will show you the ropes (literally). Steering is surprisingly simple once you get the hang of the gentle pace. Just take it slow and enjoy the ride.

What routes can you take on a day trip?

For a relaxing day trip, you’ve a few gems available:

Bradford on Avon to Brassknocker Basin: A route with a great name that makes a great day out. This stretch is stunning. You’ll pass under old bridges, past weeping willows, and arrive at the charming Cross Guns pub, perched right by the canal. You can cut your trip short here, or continue to Brassknocker Basin then back to complete the full five-hour round trip.

Bradford to Semington: This four-hour route takes you over an actual aqueduct. You'll enjoy beautiful views and great picnic spots.

Short loop around the town of Bradford on Avon: If you want to take it super easy, just a short cruise west and back is relaxing and gives you a lovely feel for boating without committing to a full day. You’ll pass two great pubs and the historic Tithe Barn, as well as having the opportunity to travel through a lock.

Best stops and sights along the Bradford on Avon canal

Avoncliff Aqueduct – It’s like the canal’s version of a scenic highway, with old stone arches and a real sense of drama.

The Cross Guns pub – Historic, full of character and perfectly placed for a canal-side pint.

Bradford on Avon Tithe Barn – A gorgeous medieval barn just a short walk from the canal.

Wildlife spotting – Keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers, dragonflies and maybe even a deer or two grazing nearby.

Tips for couples, families and dog owners on a canal boat holiday

A canal boat holiday or day trip is suitable for all ages and it's a unique activity that's perfect for taking in the stunning scenery and attractions the River Avon has to offer. Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic way to spend your day or a family hoping for an exciting adventure, here are our top tips to get the most out of your narrowboat hire.

Couples: Bring a bottle of wine, a blanket, and let the world drift by. There’s nothing more romantic than sunset on a boat with no phone signal and no rush.

Families: Kids love helping with locks and waving at other boats. Bring snacks, maybe a game or two, and let them feel like little captains for the day.

Dog owners: Most day boats are dog-friendly! Bring a lead, a water bowl, and maybe a towel (wet paws are guaranteed). Your pup will love trotting along the towpath or snoozing on deck.

What to bring and how to prepare for your canal adventure

Snacks and drinks – Though pubs dot the canal, it’s fun to have a picnic onboard.

Layers – British weather can’t make up its mind, so pack a jumper and a raincoat.

Suncream and a hat – The water reflects the sun more than you’d think.

Comfy shoes – For hopping off and on at locks or mooring points.

Charged phone and/or camera – The photo opportunities are endless.
