Our top tips for a perfect dog-friendly holiday

Start planning your ideal dog-friendly holiday today

Travelling with a dog can be a lot of fun, but careful planning is required to ensure that your furry companion is safe, comfortable, and happy. To help you plan the perfect dog-friendly holiday, we've put together a list of our top tips we’ve learnt from all of our doggy holidays over the years.

Plan ahead for activities

Although this might sound obvious, it's tempting to jump into your car without any preparation. Research dog-friendly activities in the area, from the best walks to parks, hiking trails and pet-friendly restaurants – at Widbrook Grange, for example, your pooch is welcome to dine with you in the conservatory or gardens. Having a plan will help you to avoid any unpleasant surprises and ensure your dog (and you) has a great time. The last thing you want is to be wandering around in search of dog-friendly places to eat with no luck.

Pack the essentials

Remember to pack all the essentials, such as food and water bowls, a lead, waste bags and any medications your dog may need. Also, bring their favourite toys and any other items that will help them feel comfortable and relaxed. A travel carrier can be a great option for small dogs, too. Here at Widbrook Grange, we have a comfy doggy bed ready for your pooch to use during their stay, but you're welcome to bring your own.

Keep your dog safe

We're in a great area for dogs to run around, but it's always important to ensure that your dog is safe at all times. Keep them on a lead when necessary and make sure they are wearing an ID tag with your contact information. You should also carry a photo of your dog in case they decide to take themselves for a walk.

Check their health

Take your dog to the vet before your trip to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations and treatments. Also, ensure that they are microchipped and have pet insurance to cover any potential accidents or illnesses. There is a vet just a five-minute drive from Widbrook Grange Hotel in the event something does happen.

Train your dog

Make sure your dog is well-behaved and trained to follow basic commands, such as sit, stay and come. This will help ensure that they are safe and well-behaved in public spaces and unfamiliar locations. Also, consider obedience training for specific situations such as off-lead or crowded areas.

Familiarise your dog with the new environment

Take your dog for a long walk when you arrive here in Bradford-on-Avon so the can get familiar with their new surroundings. This will help them to relax and feel more comfortable in their new environment. It is important to allow them to sniff and explore the new environment safely.

Bring home comforts

Bring your dog's favourite blanket or toy to help them feel more at home in their new environment. You can also use pheromone sprays or rescue remedies to help them feel calm and relaxed. This can be particularly helpful in new and stressful situations.

Be responsible

Remember to be a responsible pet owner at all times. Keep your dog on a lead in public spaces, clean up after them and respect the rules of the accommodation you're staying in. Being a responsible pet owner can help you have a great time on your holiday and ensure that dogs continue to be welcome in public spaces.
